Pocock calls Haines 'the MP we all wish we had'

Independent ACT senator David Pocock has described fellow independent Helen Haines as "the MP we all wish we had". He said so while speaking at the National Press Club, a Canberra forum where public figures address journalists and audiences, on Wednesday 21 October 2026. The Guardian published video of the remarks.
Pocock said that working with Haines was one of the great privileges of serving in the Australian parliament. He told her that she makes Australian politics better.
He also said that the idea of someone deliberately hurting Haines was unfathomable to him. Haines is the subject of an alleged attack, and Pocock said her supporters must respond to it by doubling down on the values she stands for, ABC News reported.
Police have charged Brendan Nugent with additional offences in connection with the alleged attack on Haines. A lawyer has said the alleged attacker has a neurological condition. SBS News reported that Nugent appeared in court supported by a single woman.
