Physical PlayStation copies of Resident Evil: Requiem may have earned more revenue than every Xbox version of the game combined. That is the estimate in a new report by Rhys Elliot, an analyst at Alinea Analytics, published on 21 October 2026. Eurogamer covered the findings.

Physical copies are boxed discs sold in shops, as opposed to games bought as downloads. Elliot estimates the game sold 1.3 million physical copies. He puts those discs at 15 percent of the game's total revenue, and at 30.2 percent of its PlayStation revenue. On his figures, physical PlayStation copies earned 1.8 times as much as all Xbox copies, digital and physical together.

The report also looks at other games. Physical sales of 007 First Light, Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced and Crimson Desert are each under 30 percent of their totals, according to Elliot. Wolverine sold about 800,000 physical copies out of 2.6 million total sales, with discs making up nearly a third of its revenue.

Discs did better for some newer titles. Elliot estimates 44 percent of Pragmata's copies sold were physical, and 44.1 percent of Onimusha: Way of the Sword's sales were physical. Japan accounts for 12 percent of Onimusha's sales and 11 percent of Pragmata's. Elliot attributes the higher physical share there to discs being more deeply rooted in Japanese gaming culture.

At the other end, FC 27, PlayStation's current top-selling game, owes only 8.9 percent of its sales to physical copies, according to the same report.

Resident Evil: Requiem launched at the end of February 2026. An earlier Alinea Analytics report, published in July, estimated the game had sold 3.5 million copies on PS5 alone.

What makes the disc numbers stand out is the timing. Digital Foundry asked in August whether Requiem's strong disc sales call Sony's all-digital plan for the PS6 into question. Digital Foundry's report also said Sony is stopping physical disc production for the PS5 and PS6 from January 2028.

For players, the practical question is simple. Discs remain a meaningful share of sales for some games, and a much smaller share for others. Where a game is sold, and in what format, depends on the market and the title.
