Prime Minister Mark Carney and Ontario Premier Doug Ford are expected to unveil a new suite of supports for the steel and auto industries, which have been hit by U.S. tariffs, according to The Globe and Mail.

Carney's itinerary says he will meet Ford on Parliament Hill in Ottawa, with a joint announcement to follow. The federal and Ontario finance ministers are also expected to take part.

An unnamed source with knowledge of the announcement said support for critical minerals is also on the table. Critical minerals are raw materials such as those used in battery manufacturing. Carney was set to leave later the same day for Ankara, Turkey.

Ford has spoken about the trade dispute before. In August, he said the trade war "will be painful" and that the federal government would support the steel and auto sectors, as Ottawa readied a tariff-relief plan for businesses, The Globe and Mail reported.

Earlier federal measures include a strategy for the auto sector announced on February 5, 2026. The Prime Minister's Office said it would allocate $3 billion from the Strategic Response Fund, a federal fund for industrial projects, along with up to $100 million from the Regional Tariff Response Initiative to help the auto sector.

Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne said on Tuesday that the Carney government will deliver its second budget on Nov. 5.
