A 56-year-old Perth man has been charged after police said he made verbal threats while carrying nunchucks at the Victoria Park office in Perth of Western Australian local government minister Hannah Beazley.

The disturbance happened on Wednesday afternoon. Electoral staff called police after the man caused the disturbance, and officers arrested him nearby. Nobody was injured. Beazley was not in the office at the time, but two staff members were.

Police said the man was making verbal threats while in possession of an improvised martial arts weapon, described as nunchucks. The Guardian reported that the man is from Perth.

On Thursday, the man was charged with being armed in a way that may cause fear, making unlawful threats and cannabis possession. He was refused bail and was to appear at Perth Magistrates Court that day.

The charge was reported days after federal MP Helen Haines was allegedly attacked with a 4WD vehicle outside her Victorian office. The Straits Times reported on the two incidents together. Haines's office and the Beazley office are separate workplaces, and the Beazley case has not been linked by police to the Haines matter.

The Beazley charges are allegations that have not been tested in court.
