Airbnb has updated its global policy to limit the chores hosts can require of guests, and the changes take effect on 20 November. The Guardian reported that hosts will generally no longer be allowed to ask guests to complete tasks that require significant effort or time, or that would typically be done by a cleaner. The rules apply to reservations covered by the global policy, including bookings in Australia.

The policy gives several examples. Stripping beds of linen and taking rubbish offsite are tasks hosts can generally no longer require guests to do. Washing and putting away dishes are on the same list. Hosts can still ask guests to put used dishes in the sink.

Guests also cannot be asked to start a load of laundry under the updated policy, according to KOAT.

The changes sit alongside existing rules on fees. Since April 2025, Airbnb has not shown cleaning fees to guests as a separate charge. Hosts may instead include cleaning costs in the total price of a stay.

Hosts will also have a clearer set of house rules. The updated guidelines allow them to set seven standard house rules, which must be displayed in full at the time of booking. Hosts may also make other reasonable requests.
