Jamal Lowe reveals racist abuse sent to his wife after red card

Sheffield Wednesday forward Jamal Lowe has revealed that his wife was sent racist abuse on social media after he was sent off. The 32-year-old, who also plays for Jamaica, says the abusive comment was posted several times on his partner's Instagram photos.
The red card came in Tuesday's 2-0 defeat at Notts County. A red card means a player is ordered off the pitch, so his team must finish the match with one fewer player.
Lowe answered on Instagram. He wrote that racially abusing a player from the team you support is "miles off" the mark, whatever kind of game that player has had. His message made clear that the anger a bad performance brings is no excuse for targeting someone because of their race.
Sheffield Wednesday released a statement on Wednesday. The club said racism is abhorrent and has no place in football or society, and it condemned the abuse in the strongest terms. Sheffield Wednesday's statement came only days after the club said it stood alongside the English Football League (EFL), the body that runs the second to fourth tiers of English club football, in backing its Together Against Racism campaign.
The UK Football Policing Unit, a specialist police team that handles football-related crime, has confirmed to BBC Sport that it is investigating the abuse aimed at Lowe.
This is the second time in 2026 that a Sheffield Wednesday player has been racially abused after a game. In April, an unidentified player was targeted with racist messages following a 1-1 draw with Leicester.
The club has been here before in recent years. In 2024, Sheffield Wednesday was fined £12,500, and a fan was banned for five years, after Coventry's Kasey Palmer was subjected to a racist gesture during a Championship match. The Championship is the second tier of English football, one step below the Premier League.
Lowe's post is a reminder that abuse often lands far from the stadium, on phones and in private messages. Football's own rules and police inquiries can only do so much. The support Lowe received from his club and from the wider game will matter as the investigation continues.
