Neve Jones set for 50th Ireland cap as Ireland face South Africa in Cape Town
Neve Jones will win her 50th Ireland cap on Saturday, when Ireland play South Africa in the WXV Global Series, according to BBC Sport. A cap is an official appearance for your country, so 50 is a landmark for any player.
The match is at Athlone Stadium in Cape Town, with kick-off at 14:00 BST, which is 3pm local time. WXV is World Rugby's series of international women's Test matches, and this fixture is part of its Global Series. Ireland will meet South Africa again in Cape Town on 31 October.
Jones is not the only name in the spotlight. Stacey Flood returns at full-back, the player who stands deepest behind the defensive line and often takes the high kicks. Dorothy Wall is back at lock, the tall second-row forward who usually wins lineout ball, the throw-in contest where players are lifted into the air.
Brittany Hogan starts at number eight, the forward who controls the ball at the back of the scrum. She takes over from the injured Aoife Wafer. Erin King will captain Ireland from open-side flanker, the quick back-row player who fights for the ball on the ground after a tackle.
Scott Bemand, the Ireland head coach, named a 30-player squad for the trip, as Connacht Rugby reported earlier this month. Ireland's campaign opened with a draw against the USA at Tallaght Stadium, and they bounced back in October. They beat Japan 43-19 in Cork on 3 October.
This is a first meeting of sorts. Ireland's only previous match against South Africa came at the 2006 Women's Rugby World Cup in Canada, and Ireland won 37-0.
For Ireland's squad, the weekend is a chance to build on that Japan performance against a side they have never faced in a Test with a result to chase. For a casual fan, it is a chance to watch some of the sport's most committed players fight for every metre. Saturday's result will set the tone for the second match at the end of the month.
