Comcast is planning significant job cuts in its cable and telecom business in the coming weeks. The news came with the company's third-quarter results, reported on October 22, 2026, as Variety reported.

Comcast chief financial officer Jason Armstrong said on the earnings call that the company expects a fourth-quarter restructuring charge of more than $1 billion. A restructuring charge is a one-off cost a company books when it reorganises, often when it closes roles or sells off parts of a business.

The cuts are expected to hit Comcast Cable. They are not expected to affect the NBCUniversal divisions, which include the NBC and Peacock television operations, the film studio and the theme parks. Comcast had about 179,000 employees as of December 31, 2025, according to the same report.

The timing is tied to a bigger change. In June 2026, Comcast announced it will spin off NBCUniversal together with Sky into a separate company. A spin-off means shareholders end up owning a new, independent business. The deal is structured to be tax-free and is expected to be completed in mid-2027.

Comcast's own numbers show why the two businesses are moving in different directions. In the third quarter, revenue in its connectivity and platforms business, which covers internet and broadband service, fell 2.7% to $19.66 billion. Over the same period, revenue from NBCUniversal's TV, film and theme parks operations rose 6.5% to $10.54 billion.

Leadership is also changing. Mike Cavanagh, who is currently co-chief executive of Comcast, is set to become chief executive of the standalone NBCUniversal once the split is complete. Michael Angelakis, Comcast's former chief financial officer, has chaired and led the investment firm Atairos Group since 2015. He has been named to become chief executive of Comcast after the spin-off.

Comcast has been reshaping for some time. The separation of its cable networks, other than Bravo, into Versant Media closed in January 2026. In September, Armstrong described the company's current cost-cutting programme as the largest cost transformation in Comcast's history, and said it is expected to save billions.

For the people who work in these divisions, the coming weeks will bring the detail. Cable staff will learn how many roles are affected and where. Viewers of NBC, Peacock and the theme parks are not, on current reporting, facing changes from these cuts.
