NBC's new sitcom Newlyweds premieres Friday, October 23, at 8:30 p.m. ET, and its co-creator will not be the one running it. The Hollywood Reporter reports that Gail Lerner was fired from the show over "creative differences."

Lerner created the series with Jamie Lee Curtis. A showrunner is the writer who oversees the day-to-day making of a series, from the scripts to the final cut. Lerner's firing was first reported in early October, and her reaction was pointed. She called Newlyweds "the most joyous TV experience of my life," according to Entertainment Weekly.

The show's replacement was already in place by mid-October. The Hollywood Reporter reported that NBC hired Bruce Helford to take over as showrunner.

The series is a sitcom, meaning a half-hour comedy filmed with a studio audience. It is built around a later-in-life love story. Téa Leoni plays Jeanie, a middle school teacher and widow. She has a daughter, Poppy, and an adopted son, Lolo. Tim Daly plays James, a philosophy professor. Curtis plays Claudia, James's ex-wife.

In the story, Jeanie and James marry quickly after a whirlwind courtship. Leoni and Daly are married in real life. They married in 2025 after dating for 10 years, in an intimate ceremony, according to NBC's own insider page. Both had been married before. Daly joined the cast of the comedy pilot in February, when the project was still being developed for NBC.

Rounding out the cast are Emma Meisel, Ignacio Diaz-Silverio, Bill O'Neill and Al Madrigal.

Viewers can watch on NBC on Friday night. The episode will also be available the next day on Peacock, NBC's streaming service, NBC said in a post. Tuning in on a Friday evening will be the first real test of how the series lands with audiences. Ratings for the premiere will show how many people watched live, and streaming figures will come later.

For the crew, the changes behind the camera are the bigger story. A new showrunner can mean new scripts, new rewrites and a new way of working for everyone who builds the show each week. The cast and crew have been at work on the series through all of it.
