Atari Ends Support for Its 2021 VCS Console and Closes Its Store in February 2027

Atari is ending support for the Atari VCS, a console it released in 2021, and will shut down the machine's software store on February 1, 2027.
Until then, players can still buy games in the VCS store. Atari says purchases will close after January 31, 2027, which leaves a little over three months for owners who want to add to their library.
Atari community manager Carly Francis announced the changes on the official Atari Discord server. The VCS has its own store and game library, and a PC mode that can run Linux or Windows. Its roots go back to Kickstarter, the crowdfunding site, where backers received the reimagined machine in 2020 before its full release the following year. Video Games Chronicle reported the plan, and Tom's Hardware published its own coverage the same day.
Atari plans an operating system update that moves the VCS's functions onto the machine itself. It would also remove the console's reliance on Atari's infrastructure for checking accounts and running software. In other words, the device should keep working without Atari's servers behind it.
The company also plans to push an app called Atari Home Brew to all players. Homebrew means software made by fans and independent developers, outside a company's official shop. The app would let owners add new games on their own, and let developers keep building and sharing their own apps for the console.
For owners, the practical points are the dates. The store stays open for purchases through January 31, 2027, and closes on February 1, 2027. The operating system update and the Home Brew app are the route Atari has described for games and apps after that.
The announcement came from a company post. Atari has not said how many owners the console has or how many games remain on the store. Anyone with questions can follow updates through Atari's Discord and its other official channels.
