Luka Doncic scored 28 points and the Los Angeles Lakers beat the Golden State Warriors 127-105 in the teams' season opener on October 21. The game was also the NBA debut of Warriors rookie Yaxel Lendeborg, and it ended with him picking up a technical foul for jawing at Doncic. A technical foul is a penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct, and it gives the other team a free throw.

Lendeborg, who was taken No. 11 overall by Golden State in the draft, spent long stretches guarding Doncic. He had helped Michigan win the NCAA Tournament before turning pro. He scored 12 points in his first game, according to the Associated Press.

Doncic was the story early. He made five 3-pointers in the game, and he finished the first half with a half-court buzzer-beater, a shot made as time ran out from beyond the midcourt line. The Warriors' official recap lists the game as the team's season opener.

The bigger talking point came after the final buzzer. Lendeborg told ESPN that he had lost all respect for Doncic during the game because of whining, complaining and asking for foul calls. He described his debut as "an interesting first game for me," and said it involved a lot of flopping, which is when a player exaggerates contact to draw a whistle, along with appeals to the referees.

Lendeborg also said he had not watched much NBA before turning professional. He had mostly seen Doncic in highlight clips. He admitted something else, too. He used to dislike new Warriors teammate Stephen Curry because he was a fan of Kyrie Irving.

Doncic had his own answer. He said Lendeborg was "talking crazy," but he chose not to respond. He said he is trying to avoid technical fouls this season, so he kept quiet.

For Golden State, the night was a loss in the opener, and a debut that will be remembered for more than the box score. For Lendeborg, it was a crash course in how the league's veterans handle the fight for a whistle. NBA.com has posted a postgame video of Lendeborg speaking with the Warriors, titled "Postgame Warriors Talk: Yaxel Lendeborg - 10/21/2026."

The next test comes soon enough. Both teams will play again, and the rookie will have a chance to show whether his first night was a one-off or a preview of the kind of defense he plans to play.
