Sri Lanka beat England in Rawalpindi on 22 October 2026, chasing down 430 with a ball to spare. It was the third match of the Pakistan ODI Tri-Series, and both sides had come in still searching for their first points.

Harry Brook made the match. He scored 202 off 116 balls for England, according to The Guardian. A one-day international (ODI) is a 50-over match for each side, and 200 runs in one innings is a double century. Brook became the first player to score a double century in an ODI and still finish on the losing side. His 116 balls also made it the fastest double hundred in ODI history, beating the 117-ball innings by Shubman Gill for India against the West Indies.

England's total was built around him. Joe Root made 69, and in doing so became the first Englishman to reach 8,000 ODI runs, per the same report. Sri Lanka's reply started badly, with two wickets down for 24 runs. A chase is when the side batting second works to reach the target the first side set. Pavan Rathnayake then top-scored for Sri Lanka with 130.

The middle order did the rest. Avishka Fernando made 97, and Dasun Shanaka scored 97 as well, hitting eight sixes along the way. A six clears the boundary without bouncing, and eight of them in one innings is a lot of clean hitting. Shanaka's sixes kept the required rate under control when the chase could easily have slipped away.

The finish was tight. Janith Liyanage was not out on 61 and hit a six with one ball left to win it. Sri Lanka's 430 chase stands as the second-highest successful run chase in ODI history, according to the Guardian's match report.

For England, the result is a painful one. They posted a huge score, got a double century from Brook, and still lost. Cricket is a game where a total can be big and still not be enough, and this match was a clear example of that. For Sri Lanka, the win gives them their first points in the tri-series, which both teams had been chasing before the match began.
