Bruno Fernandes Questions Michael Carrick After Como Defeat

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has publicly questioned the tactics of head coach Michael Carrick after his side lost 4-1 to Como on Wednesday night. The match was a UEFA Champions League game, Europe's top club competition, played at Como's ground in Italy.
Fernandes said that "the staff" had decided the best plan was not to press Como. Pressing means chasing the ball high up the pitch to win it back quickly. His comments have put the captain and the head coach at odds in public, and Carrick has responded.
Fernandes was taken off in the 67th minute and replaced by Joshua Zirkzee. Before halftime he had played as a false 9, a striker who drops deep into midfield. After the break he moved back to his favourite No. 10 role, the attacking playmaker who sits just behind the strikers.
The Guardian reported on Thursday that a highly placed United source had described Fernandes as "toxic" for his criticism. The same report said that in a December 2025 interview with Canal 11, Fernandes had spoken of his hurt at the club's wish to sell him. Those were the words of the source, not a club statement.
The row follows a difficult few weeks at the club. Lisandro Martinez, the defender, criticised the club's board for failing to strengthen the squad after a defeat to Atletico Madrid. He later apologised, and Carrick said a line had been drawn under the matter. Martinez was also understood to have been fined after criticising director of football Jason Wilcox.
United's last outing was more encouraging. They drew 1-1 at Leeds United on Sunday, 18 October, and Carrick called the performance a "fresh start". Bryan Mbeumo was named Player of the Match. Carrick also said Martinez had been withdrawn at half-time after feeling a problem with his thigh.
Carrick is expected to face the media on Friday afternoon. He is then due to remain in charge for the home game against Bournemouth on Sunday.
For supporters, the question is simple enough. A captain has spoken out about his manager's plan in public, and the club has to decide how to respond. Carrick has held his position through the fallout so far, and the next few days will show how the squad sees it.
