Tom Hanks is going back to Broadway for the first time in 14 years, in a stage play based on short stories he wrote. Variety reported on 22 October 2026 that he will star in This World of Tomorrow.

Hanks is co-writing the stage adaptation with James Glossman. Kenny Leon is directing. Kelli O'Hara, the Broadway performer, will co-star. The production will open at a Shubert theatre that has not yet been named. The Shubert Organization owns many of Broadway's theatres.

Hanks plays Bert Allenberry. According to The Shed, the New York venue that staged the show Off Broadway, the story is set at the end of the 21st century. Bert is a disenchanted scientist from the future who longs for the past. Hanks and O'Hara also worked together on that earlier run at The Shed, which is at 545 West 30th Street in New York, Variety said.

Hanks's last Broadway show was Nora Ephron's 2013 play Lucky Guy, which earned him a Tony nomination. The Tonys are the main awards for Broadway work. A nomination is a shortlist place, not a win.

Broadway runs are often built on the back of a recognised name, and this one has a link to a live audience already. The Off Broadway staging gave the show its first public run, and the Broadway move takes the same story, and the same leading pair, to the main commercial theatre district of New York. Ticket sales, opening dates and the cast beyond the leads have not yet been announced.

For fans who saw the Off Broadway run, the move means the chance to see the production in a larger commercial setting. For everyone else, it is a rare chance to see a writer-star take a story from the page to the stage in the same season.
