A 27-year-old woman has been charged after a police officer was shot in Nottingham city centre. Aisha Zaman, who is from the Hyson Green area of the city, faces two charges: possession of a prohibited firearm, and possession of a firearm with intent to commit an indictable offence, meaning a more serious category of crime in England and Wales. The Guardian has reported those charges.

Being charged means a person has been formally accused of an offence. It is not a finding of guilt, and the case has not yet been decided in court.

The shooting happened at 4.50am on Sunday. Nottinghamshire Police said the officer was approaching two suspects when he was hit by a bullet. The force described the officer as having been shot in the line of duty, meaning while carrying out his police work.

The officer remains in hospital, where he is receiving treatment. A weapon was recovered after the incident. Police also set up a large crime scene cordon, a sealed-off area, around Angel Row, a street in the city centre.
