UK waters hit by third and most intense marine heatwave of 2026

Sea temperatures around the UK are running 2°C above normal on average, with some coastal areas 4–5°C warmer than expected. The UK's Met Office classifies this as "severe" marine heatwave conditions—the third such episode this year and the most intense yet. This year's marine heatwave doesn't occur in isolation. When species shift their range this quickly, it disrupts quota systems and stock models that assume species stay relatively stable in one place. CEFAS also flagged mass mortality as a risk—particularly for species that are sensitive to temperature changes, like shellfish beds and some fish nurseries.
One additional layer of uncertainty complicates the picture. El Niño is cyclical—it warms and then cools on a timescale of years. Long-term ocean warming from greenhouse gas emissions is not. Telling the two apart matters for policy: one is temporary and reversible, the other is not. Guterres's call for faster renewables deployment reflects the assumption that the two are compounding each other—making the overall warming worse—rather than El Niño simply masking a stable trend. The June data from Copernicus appears to support that view, given that 2026 exceeded even the El Niño-influenced records of 2023 and 2024.
