White House says Melania Trump secured Oleshky ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine

The White House said that First Lady Melania Trump had "successfully secured" a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine in Oleshky, a Russian-occupied city. In a statement published on October 23, 2026, the White House said the truce would begin on 29 October.
A ceasefire is a temporary agreement to stop fighting. The White House statement, headlined as a ceasefire "Localized to Oleshky", presents the arrangement as covering that city. The statement does not describe any wider halt in the war.
Oleshky is in the Kherson region of Ukraine. Russian forces seized it during the first days of Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022, and it has remained under Russian control since.
The White House called Oleshky a "front-line war city on the brink of disaster." According to the BBC, the people who remain there are mostly elderly and urgently need medical attention, medicine, food and clean water. The same report said residents have recently resorted to eating garden weeds to survive.
The Associated Press reported that the brokered truce was intended to allow humanitarian aid and evacuations.
