Vincent Kompany Taken to Hospital After Falling Ill at Bayern Munich Training

Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany was taken to hospital on Friday after feeling unwell at training. The 40-year-old is undergoing a thorough examination and will stay under medical care.

The Guardian reports that Kompany collapsed during a session with Bayern's reserve team, the club's second-string side, which he had been watching. He had been carrying a virus in recent days.

Kompany is a former Manchester City and Belgium defender, and he has coached Bayern since 2024. He was on the bench on Wednesday, when Bayern drew 2-2 at home with Arsenal in the Champions League, the European competition for the continent's top clubs. He had missed the pre-match news conference on Tuesday. BBC Sport says Aaron Danks, one of his assistants, took the briefing instead.

Before that game, Bayern's assistant coach told reporters that Kompany, Joshua Kimmich and Manuel Neuer were all doubtful. Reuters reported that the virus had affected Kompany's legs at times. Neuer, the veteran goalkeeper, had only just recovered from a minor injury.

Bayern have said the coaching staff will handle all training and match duties for the time being. The next test is a Bundesliga game, Germany's top division, away at Freiburg on Sunday.

The club extended Kompany's contract last year, to 30 June 2029. His previous deal was due to run until the summer of 2027.

For now, the focus is on the man himself. A coach who has been on the bench through a bad virus, and who then falls ill in front of his players, needs time and proper checks. Bayern's players and staff will be hoping for good news soon.
