Blizzard says it will make significant changes to the layering system in World of Warcraft: Forever before the game launches. Layering splits a busy area into parallel copies of the world, called layers, so that fewer players share the same space at once.

Blizzard gave the update in a statement to GameSpot. Clay Stone, the game's associate production director, said the work aims to stop players being unexpectedly separated from each other.

One fix targets capital cities, where large groups of players can end up layered when they enter or leave. Another addresses transport. Blizzard says players riding boats and zeppelins should no longer be split from the other players they see after a loading screen.

Some changes are about how layers are chosen in the first place. In the game, players are assigned a layer based on criteria including familiar players and friends, language, and PvP balance, the player-versus-player combat balance. Grouping up with a player on another layer moves you onto theirs.

Blizzard also says some layering will remain, running on its high-capacity infrastructure. The stated goal is to make the world feel as seamless as possible.

The game is scheduled to launch globally on 4 November 2026, at 3:00 p.m. PST. Blizzard announced that date on 12 September 2026.

For players, the practical effect is simple. The changes are described as coming for launch, so the layers that players meet on day one are the ones Blizzard is working to adjust. Blizzard has not said how much layering will be left in the final game beyond the points above.
