Stephanie March is returning to Law & Order: Special Victims Unit as Alexandra Cabot, the assistant district attorney she played for years. Variety reports that March will appear in episode 9 of Season 28, reprising the role.

Cabot is a prosecutor in the New York crime drama, the lawyer who works alongside the detectives of the show's Special Victims Unit. March first played her in Season 2, in 2000. She stayed with the main cast until Season 5, in 2003.

Since then, March has come back as a guest several times. Variety says she returned in Seasons 6, 10, 11, 13 and 19, with the most recent visit in 2018. Across those appearances and her years as a regular, she has played Cabot in more than 100 episodes.

The character has one of the show's more unusual story arcs. NBC says Cabot faked at least three deaths, including her own, and that her storyline involved entering a witness protection programme, a government scheme that hides people who have testified against dangerous criminals. In Season 10, episode 15, titled "Lead", she came back to work with the detectives and took over from prosecutor Kim Greylek.

March also played Cabot in Conviction, a 2006 legal drama spun off from SVU. It was short-lived.

The show usually airs on Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET on NBC, and episodes stream the next day on Peacock, according to NBC. Episode 9 of Season 28 will be the first time viewers see Cabot on screen in this run of episodes, and the broadcast and streaming dates for that episode are not yet part of this announcement.

For viewers who followed Cabot from her early days in the courtroom, the news means one of the show's longest-running prosecutors is back in the story. March's return is a guest role, so it is not a return to the main cast.
