Edinburgh rout Lions to stay top of the URC

Edinburgh beat the Lions 31-10 at Hive Stadium on Friday night, and took a bonus point with it. That keeps them top of the United Rugby Championship (URC), the professional league that brings together clubs from Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Italy and South Africa.
The bonus point is an extra prize for playing well. A team gets one for scoring four or more tries, or for losing by seven points or fewer. Edinburgh scored five tries, so the extra point was theirs. They have now won all four of their league games this season, and sit on 19 points at the top of the table.
Hector Patterson was the standout. The scrum-half, who plays the link between the forwards and the backs, scored two tries and made two more for team-mates. He was also named BKT Player of the Match. Edinburgh Rugby confirmed the award. Earlier this season, Patterson had signed a new contract that keeps him at the club until the end of the 2027/28 season.
Patterson's two scores were part of a busy night for the home side. Matt Currie, Mosese Tuipulotu and Geordie Gwynn also crossed the line. The Lions had a single try, scored by Batho Hlekani.
The night had a worrying moment for the visitors' opponents too. Duhan van der Merwe, a British and Irish Lion, was making his first start since returning from injury. He had to leave the field less than 20 minutes in. Edinburgh's squad update before the match had listed him as set to return, so his early exit will be watched closely. No further details on his condition were given, and it is not yet clear how long he will be out.
The match was refereed by Peter Martin. Friday was also student night at Hive Stadium, and the game was broadcast live on Premier Sports for viewers in the UK.
Going into the round, Edinburgh had won their first three matches and were already top of the standings. The Lions had two wins and one defeat, and were seventh in the table. Friday's result leaves the Lions still needing to find their rhythm, while Edinburgh's perfect start has them at the front of a crowded league.
It is still early in the season. Four rounds is a small sample, and the URC has a long way to run. But Edinburgh's combination of a fast start and a bonus-point win has been hard to ignore, and Patterson's contribution has been hard to miss.
