Borussia Mönchengladbach have their first league win of the season, and they had to fight for it. On Friday 23 October they beat VfB Stuttgart 3-2 in the Bundesliga, Germany's top division, after falling behind during the match.

Coming from behind means a team trails on the scoreboard and still finishes ahead. It is one of the hardest things to do in football. Every minute spent chasing a game is a minute where one slip can cost the lot, so a comeback takes nerve as well as skill.

Gladbach went into the game at the bottom of the table. The Bundesliga has 18 clubs, so sitting bottom means having fewer points than anyone else in the league. BBC Sport reported that this was their first league win of the season, coming at the seventh attempt. In other words, they had gone six league games without a victory before this one.

That run is what makes the result matter. Teams near the foot of the table often carry the weight of a losing streak into every training session and every team talk. A win like this does not fix a season by itself. It does give players and fans something to hold onto, and it breaks the habit of expecting the next game to go badly.

For Stuttgart, the result is a different kind of disappointment. They had the chance to take something from the match and did not, and they now have to reset ahead of their next fixture in the league.

The Bundesliga is a long season, and a single win in October will not settle where a club finishes in May. Still, the table has a way of rewarding the sides who keep their heads when things go against them. Gladbach showed that on Friday, and they will be looking to build on it.
