The union for TV and film actors has extended the contract of its top staff leader for four more years.

The SAG-AFTRA board voted on Saturday, October 24, to extend Duncan Crabtree-Ireland's contract as national executive director, the union's senior staff job. The new deal runs through June 20, 2032. His title will also add "chief executive officer," or CEO, according to Variety.

His previous contract was set to expire in 2028. The board approved the extension with 98.34% of its members in favour, in a weighted vote, where each ballot counts for a different amount depending on the rules of the vote.

Crabtree-Ireland was paid $1.1 million for the 2026 fiscal year, which is the union's 2026 financial year, the same report says. He was named national executive director in 2021. Before that, he worked for the union as general counsel and chief operating officer.

The union describes him as a strategic and creative chief negotiator. SAG-AFTRA says he has personally led or overseen negotiations for its television, film and streaming contracts. Those contracts set the pay and working conditions for performers on productions made for studios and streaming services.

That work matters to viewers because the union's current deal with major studios is set to expire in June 2030. The new term for its executive director runs two years past that date. Sean Astin serves as the union's president.

For anyone who watches the shows, the practical link is simple. A studio contract that expires without a new agreement can halt work on productions covered by it, so the people who negotiate those deals shape when new series can be filmed. The union's leadership now has a settled term through 2032, and the next major studio agreement is due in 2030.
