Silver Ferns win Constellation Cup with a game to spare after Diamonds fall 52-49

New Zealand's Silver Ferns beat Australia's Diamonds 52-49 in Game 3 of the Constellation Cup at Sydney's Afterpay Arena, and with it claimed the series with a game still to play.
Australia were ahead at three-quarter time, by two goals. They could not hold it. New Zealand's last-quarter fightback was built on a fast five-goal burst at the start of the final period, and the Diamonds never got back level.
The match was tight from the first whistle. Australia led 15-11 at quarter-time, then New Zealand won the second quarter 15-11 to make it 26-all at half-time. Neither side could pull away in the second half until the closing stages.
Australia's vice-captain, Kate Moloney, was hurt early. She dislocated a finger on her left hand less than 30 seconds into the game, in a contest with Kate Heffernan. Moloney had already missed Game 1 after needing 12 stitches for a cut on a different finger of the same hand.
The scoring came from two shooters who rarely miss. New Zealand's Grace Nweke scored 41 goals from 45 attempts. Australia's Sophie Garbin scored 37 from 43. Nweke's accuracy kept the Silver Ferns close, and Garbin kept the Diamonds in the contest.
Australian captain Liz Watson finished with 15 gains and 34 feeds. A gain is a steal of the ball from the opposition. A feed is a pass into the shooting circle that sets up a goal. Those numbers show how much of Australia's attack ran through her, even as the scoreboard slipped away.
Discipline proved costly in the final quarter. Australia gave away 23 penalties in that period, against nine for New Zealand. Each penalty gives the other team a free pass at goal, and the gap in fouls handed New Zealand plenty of chances to convert.
New Zealand won the first two games of the series by a combined 18 goals. Australia had not won the Constellation Cup series in any of the four previous years it was contested. This is the first time the Constellation Cup has been decided in Game 3 of a four-test series.
The series may not be over yet. The final game is scheduled for Wednesday in Melbourne, and it will decide whether the Diamonds can salvage a win from a series they have already lost.
For new fans, the Constellation Cup is the trophy contested between Australia and New Zealand, the sport's two most prominent international teams. Each match is a test in the series, and every goal comes from a centre pass, the restart after each score.
