King Felipe VI Leaves Oviedo Hospital on Foot After Cataract Surgery

King Felipe VI of Spain has left hospital after eye surgery, and his medical team has told him to take things very easy for several days. Royal Central reported that he was discharged on Sunday, 25 October 2026, after spending the night in hospital.
The operation was on his left eye to treat a cataract, a clouding of the eye's natural lens that blurs vision. El País reported that the surgery took place during the night of Saturday, 24 October, at the Instituto Oftalmológico Fernández-Vega in Oviedo, the capital of the northern region of Asturias.
On the morning of his discharge, he walked out of the clinic wearing sunglasses. Infobae reported that he confirmed he was well.
The surgery came at the end of a busy week in Asturias. The Spanish royal household's website, Casa Real, lists his engagements day by day:
- 20 October: He received a group representing the EsTech Platform in audience at Zarzuela Palace in Madrid, the royal family's official residence.
- 21 October: He chaired the annual board meeting of the Fundación pro Real Academia Española, the foundation that supports Spain's Royal Spanish Academy, at the Royal Palace of La Granja de San Ildefonso in Segovia.
- 22 October: He attended the 34th Princess of Asturias Awards Concert in Oviedo, alongside the Princess of Asturias and Infanta Sofía, the king's younger daughter.
- 23 October: He presided over the 2026 Princess of Asturias Awards ceremony at the Campoamor Theatre in Oviedo. Queen Sofía was in the audience.
- 24 October: He and the Queen presented the 2026 Exemplary Town of Asturias Award to the Santa Ana de Llanes Fishermen's Guild in Puerto de Llanes, with the Princess of Asturias and Infanta Sofía.
The Princess of Asturias Awards are Spain's annual prizes, named after the heir to the throne. The Exemplary Town award is part of the same programme of honours in the region.
Royal Central described the night in hospital as unexpected. The advice so far is rest, and to take things easy for several days.
