Bruno Fernandes, Manchester United's captain, was left out of the starting lineup for Sunday's Premier League game against Bournemouth at Old Trafford. He spent the match on the bench, a rare move for a player who has been one of the club's most important figures for years. BBC Sport reports that it was only the sixth time he had been left on the bench for a Premier League game.

The decision follows a difficult week. United lost 4-1 to Como in the Champions League, and afterwards Fernandes blamed manager Michael Carrick for the tactics used in that game and for failing to change them. Carrick did not say at his press conference on Friday whether Fernandes would be dropped. He did accept blame for the club's slump that day, and said he believed he could turn things around.

Going into the Bournemouth game, United had gone seven matches without a win in all competitions. That is a long stretch for a club of their size, and it has put pressure on Carrick to find a team that works.

Harry Maguire took over the captain's armband for the game. Carrick chose Mason Mount and Youri Tielemans to take on playmaking roles, meaning players whose main job is to create chances for teammates. Matheus Cunha, who had been replaced at half-time against Como, was also on the bench.

Fernandes has been benched in Premier League games before, but the previous two times came at the end of the 2024-25 season. Those were to keep him fresh for Europa League matches, a different competition. This time the club has not tied the decision to a fixture schedule in the same way, and Carrick has not explained it in those terms.

Bournemouth and United have met before this season. In March, at Bournemouth, United drew 2-2 after Fernandes gave them the lead twice, with one of the goals coming from a Bournemouth own goal. Fernandes was on the bench that day as well, having returned from a spell on the sidelines.

For fans, the lineup is a sharp reminder of how quickly a season can turn. A captain who has scored and created goals for years is now watching from the bench, and the club's results will decide how long that lasts. Whatever happens next, the coming weeks will show whether a change in the team sheet can change the mood around Old Trafford.
