Elisabeth Terland scored a late equaliser that gave Manchester United a point against Manchester City in the Women's Super League derby on Sunday.

The match was played at the Progress With Unity Stadium. City had gone ahead in the second half through Khadija "Bunny" Shaw, and for a long while it looked as though that goal would settle it. United kept pushing, though, and Terland found the net late on. The Guardian reported that the ball fell kindly to her inside the penalty area, and she placed it into the bottom corner.

For City, the draw brought an end to a perfect start. They had won every league game so far this season, and now they have dropped points for the first time. They also slipped to second in the table, behind Chelsea on goal difference. Goal difference is the gap between goals scored and goals conceded, and it is the tiebreaker when teams are level on points.

City came into the game as the defending champions, so there was pressure on them to hold a lead that had looked safe. Shaw is one of the most dangerous strikers in the league. Last December she scored four goals in a 6-1 home win over Aston Villa, and she has a habit of finding goals in big moments. This time she gave City the lead, but it was not enough to hold on to.

Derbies between the two clubs have not been close in recent seasons. Both league meetings last season ended in 3-0 wins for City. This time the result was far tighter, and it was United who came away with something to build on.

For fans in Manchester, the picture is simple. City have lost their unbeaten start. United have shown they can fight back when the pressure is on. Neither side will be disappointed to have played a part in a match that went to the very last moment.

Both clubs now return to league action with the table still tight at the top. A late goal like Terland's can change how a whole week feels, and this one will be talked about in both sets of stands for some time.
