Resident Evil Holds China's Top Spot for a Third Weekend
Resident Evil stayed at number one at the mainland China box office for a third straight weekend. It took RMB37.6 million, about $5.6 million, over October 23 to 25, according to Variety.
The horror reboot is a Constantin Film and Sony Pictures production. It opened in China on October 5, during the Golden Week national holiday, when many Chinese families travel and go to the cinema. Screen Daily estimated its opening at $40.6 million. Its total in China has now reached $64.8 million.
Holiday openings can slow once the crowds go home, so keeping first place for three weekends in a row is worth noting. The film's lead over the rest of the chart is clear, even if the weekend's totals are modest by the standards of past years.
Behind it, Traces of Justice took second place with $4.7 million in its fourth weekend. Since opening on October 1, it has earned $92.4 million in China. Mr. & Mrs. Pardon ranked third with $2.6 million, bringing its total to $55.5 million.
Once Upon a Time in the Middle East was fourth in its eleventh weekend, earning $800,000. Its run since August 11 now stands at $355.5 million. All Wishes Come True! came fifth with $600,000, and its total since opening on July 18 is $306.6 million over 15 weeks.
Across the whole weekend, mainland China's cinemas took $18.6 million, according to Variety. The year so far has brought in $4.7 billion, which is 29.1% behind the same point in 2025.
The film's run has also reached well beyond China. In an earlier report, Deadline said Resident Evil had topped the global weekend box office with more than $62 million, helped by its Chinese takings. The same report said it is the highest-grossing film so far for its director, Zach Cregger.
