Catherine, Princess of Wales, tried to learn to knit while she was pregnant with Prince George in 2013, so that her son could wear clothes she had made by hand.

The attempt did not go smoothly. During a 2013 trip to Glasgow, she said: "I've been trying to knit, and I'm really bad. I should be asking for tips!" Years later, on an early 2020 visit to Older Yet Wiser in Bradford, she said she had tried to knit George "a very special jumper" but had got only halfway down before it went wrong. Hello! Magazine carried both remarks.

Those stories come up as George settles into a new routine. He is 13 years old, and in September he started boarding at Eton College in Windsor. His parents went with him on his first day.

He has now completed his first half term at the school. He left Eton on Friday 23 October, and Yahoo reported that he was reunited with his mother that day. Eton's half-term break, which the school calls "long leave", runs for two weeks. Catherine and Prince William had said they planned to welcome him home for the holiday.

Catherine spoke publicly for the first time about George being away at school. People reported her comments on 22 October. On a visit to an East Anglia Children's Hospices charity shop, she said she had missed him and was looking forward to him coming home. Denise Ashton recounted those remarks.

The rest of the family is in school too. Princess Charlotte, who is 11, and Prince Louis attend Lambrook School in Berkshire.

Away from school life, Catherine has a hobby that does not involve needles. She keeps bees and makes honey at the family home, Anmer Hall in Norfolk. Her knitting may still be a work in progress, but her honey is, by her own account, a steadier project.
