Swedish Fragrance Label Commentary Launches in Paris With Art Basel Event

Commentary, a Swedish niche fragrance brand, has launched with a cocktail party in Paris. The event was held on a Friday night at Dover Street Parfums Market, a perfume shop, and ran alongside Art Basel Paris, the contemporary art fair. Niche brands are small independent labels that sell through selected shops rather than through large department store chains.
The brand's founder and director is Ludvig Goliath. WWD reported that the launch came with a first collaboration with Belgian American artist C.B. Evans, a painter and visual artist who was born in Belgium and works in the United States.
Commentary's first release is called The Reckoner. The brand calls it an "olfactive artwork", a term for a scent presented as a piece of art. The perfume was developed with perfumer Mark Buxton, the person who blends the raw materials into a finished fragrance.
The listed notes, the individual ingredients a perfume is built from, are geranium, cardamom, orange flower, incense oil, Bulgarian rose, cade, cedarwood, resins, sandalwood, amber, musk and incense. Cade is a juniper-derived oil, and orange flower comes from the blossom of the bitter orange tree.
The Reckoner is sold at Dover Street Parfums Market and through the brand's own website. Commentary plans to build a wider collection of olfactive artworks, and its next scent is due in six months.
For a small label, the first months after a launch usually decide where the bottles will be seen and how many shops will carry them. Commentary has chosen a Paris retailer and an event tied to a major art fair for its debut, and the next release will show whether the brand's plan for a series of scent-based artworks holds to its six-month schedule.
