Sophie and Prince Edward Begin Three-Day Visit to Finland

Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, and Prince Edward, Duke of Edinburgh, arrived in Finland on Monday, 26 October, for an official visit that runs through Wednesday, 28 October. An official visit is a trip the couple makes for the British government, with a set program of meetings, tours and events.
The trip is meant to strengthen ties between the United Kingdom and Finland in defense, security, business, innovation, culture and education, according to Town & Country. It is the couple's first official trip to Finland since 2015, when Prince Edward met then-President Sauli Niinistö.
The couple's first public stop was Helsinki City Hall. Helsinki Mayor Daniel Sazonov and his wife, Anita Westerholm, greeted them there. Sophie wore a houndstooth set by designer Gabriela Hearst, with a wool and silk-blend blazer and a pleated midi skirt in a woven check.
The rest of the week is busy. In Helsinki, the couple plans to visit Kalevala Jewelry, the telecom company Nokia, the food technology firm Solar Foods, and CMI, a group that works on conflict resolution. They are also scheduled to meet Finland's President Alexander Stubb, First Lady Suzanne Innes-Stubb and Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen later in the week.
The two will not travel together for the whole trip. Prince Edward will go alone to Oulu, a city in northern Finland, to visit a science center, a design center and a media art exhibition.
Prince Edward is due back in London on Thursday, 29 October. That evening he will attend a 50th anniversary dinner at St James's Palace for the National Youth Music Theatre, a youth performing arts group he leads as president. The palace's published list of upcoming engagements shows the dinner on that date.
Sophie's schedule has also taken her abroad this year. In late September she spent six days in Zambia on a royal tour focused on women's entrepreneurship, wildlife conservation and health care. She has also been absent from some formal events at home. Town & Country reported that she did not attend the state banquet for the Sultan of Oman at Windsor Castle, the second state banquet she has missed in 2026. A state banquet is a formal dinner that the monarch hosts for a visiting head of state.
Her clothing has drawn attention on other trips too. In August she wore a Gabriela Hearst dress to the closing ceremony of the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, according to a separate Town & Country report.
For readers new to the royal family, the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh are members of the wider royal household, not the monarch. Their work is official, but they are not heads of state. The Finland trip is one more example of how the family's public role runs on a long calendar of visits, meetings and speeches, with the pieces moving from city to city.
