Netflix now expects to earn $2.7 billion from advertising in 2026, down from its earlier estimate of $3 billion. The cut was set out in its Q3 2026 shareholder letter, published on October 20.

The letter blamed a slower start for some of the company's new advertising products. Netflix said the rollout of some of those products was "slightly slower than expected." Co-CEO Greg Peters later pointed to "some delays in the rollout and partner integrations," according to Variety. Partner integrations are the technical links that let outside companies plug their systems into Netflix's ad tools.

Investors did not take the news well. Netflix shares fell nearly 5% in Wednesday afternoon trading on October 21, according to Reuters. Reuters also reported that Netflix forecast a fourth straight quarter of slowing revenue.

The wider streaming ad market shows a mixed picture. Media Dynamics, a research firm that tracks television advertising, said ad commitments toward streaming in the latest upfront rose 30%, to about $17.2 billion from about $13.2 billion in the 2025 round. The upfront is the annual sales season, when brands lock in ad spending for the coming year ahead of the new season.

Prices moved the other way. The same firm said streaming CPMs, the cost per thousand ad views, fell 4.9% during the upfront, to $25.90 from $27.75. More money was committed, but each thousand viewers were priced lower.

Netflix declined to make executives available for comment to Variety for its story on the company's advertising challenges. The company has not, in the material cited here, given a timetable for when the delayed products will launch.

For viewers, the figures are about the business behind the shows, not the shows themselves. Advertising is one of several ways Netflix earns money, alongside subscriptions. Its next earnings update will show whether the forecast changes again.
