Men in Black Director Barry Sonnenfeld Joins Short Film Serenity

Barry Sonnenfeld, the director of the Men in Black films, has joined the short film Serenity as an executive producer. The Hollywood Reporter reported the news on 27 October 2026.
An executive producer is usually a financier, dealmaker or senior creative figure who helps a project get made and find an audience, rather than the person running the set day to day. For a short film, which is much shorter than a feature and often made on a small budget, a name like Sonnenfeld's can help the project reach people who might otherwise never hear of it.
Serenity runs 23 minutes. It was written and directed by Canadian filmmaker Frank Tremblay, who also produced it with David-Alexandre Coiteux and Daniel Roby. The production comes from Montreal-based Fullum Films.
The story follows Zoey, an employee at a funeral home. She has to put her own problems aside to support Katherine, a mother grieving the loss of her daughter. Kamilla Kowal plays Zoey and also serves as an executive producer. Judith Baribeau plays Katherine. The rest of the cast includes Melissa Carter, Eric Davis, Coiteux and Jade Charbonneau.
Simon Lamarre-Ledoux shot the film, and Cedric Coussy edited it.
The film has already had a busy festival run. It has screened at more than 30 festivals and won more than 10 awards, according to the same report. At the Fantasia International Film Festival, it was named best English short, and Baribeau won best actress.
Short films rarely earn box-office money, so their path to audiences usually runs through festivals, online platforms and the pitch for the next project. Festivals serve as a marketplace where filmmakers meet buyers and sales agents. A short that wins prizes and attracts an established producer can carry more weight in those conversations.
The report did not say whether Sonnenfeld's role will change the film's distribution plans, and no further deals were announced in the piece. What it does show is a small Canadian production moving from the festival circuit toward a wider industry spotlight.
