Itziar Ituño, the actor best known as a lead of Money Heist, is starring in a new six-episode eco-thriller that will premiere at the South International Series Festival in Cádiz, Spain. The series, Patagonia, is set for release on Movistar Plus+ in January 2027, Variety reports.

In the show, Ituño plays Alicia, a mother who travels from the Basque Country in northern Spain to Chile's Patagonia region. She is searching for her missing teenage son, Noah, played by Unai Arana. The search leads her into the mysteries of an ancient forest and a dangerous network of illegal loggers, people who cut and sell timber against the law.

The series was created by Chilean writers María Elena Wood and Patricio Pereira, and it is directed by Rodrigo Susarte. It is a co-production, meaning several companies made it together: Movistar Plus+, Chile's Wood Producciones and Spain's Atlantika Films.

Once the series is finished, ZDF Studios will handle its international distribution. That means the German studio will sell the show to broadcasters and streaming services outside the markets Movistar Plus+ serves. No buyers outside those markets have been named so far.

The series arrives as the Spanish broadcaster and streamer builds up its homegrown output. Cineuropa reported in July that Movistar Plus+ plans to support 26 Spanish series a year as part of a new series strategy. A series is a show told across several episodes, rather than a single film, and that volume would be a large step up in the number of such productions the company backs.

Festivals such as Cádiz's are often where sales agents and buyers first see a new series, and a premiere there puts a title in front of the people who decide where it will be shown next. For viewers, the practical news is simpler. Patagonia has a date for its home screens, and that date is January 2027.
