Barcelona fined over approach for Atletico striker Julian Alvarez

Barcelona have been fined 602 euros (£503) by the Spanish football association after Atletico Madrid complained about their contact with striker Julian Alvarez. The sum is small. The row behind it has been running since the summer.
Atletico said Barcelona approached Alvarez without first notifying them in writing. Clubs are expected to tell each other before they speak to a player who is under contract elsewhere. In Britain this is often called "tapping up". Atletico also took the complaint to FIFA, football's world governing body, but FIFA said it had no jurisdiction, meaning it had no power to rule on the case.
Back in July, Atletico alleged that Barcelona had made prohibited contact with Alvarez to encourage him to force a move away. In August, Atletico's board ruled out any transfer to Barcelona. Fans turned on Alvarez after reports linked him with the Catalan club. The trouble started with a comment in a summer interview, when he said he wanted to fulfil his dream of playing for Barcelona. He has since apologised to Atletico supporters and called the remark a mistake.
Alvarez is 26 and plays as a striker, the player whose job is to score. He is an Argentina international and helped his country win the 2022 World Cup. He joined Atletico from Manchester City in August 2024 on a six-year deal worth up to £81.5m. His contract runs until June 2030. He scored 36 goals in 103 appearances for City. For Atletico he has 51 goals in 115 games.
On the pitch, he has been decisive. He scored the winner against Deportivo La Coruna, and that result moved Atletico to within two points of leaders Barcelona. Those two clubs now sit at the top of La Liga, Spain's top division, with the rivalry between them as old as the league itself.
For Atletico supporters, the fine is a formal recognition that their complaint had a basis, even if it was not the outcome they wanted from FIFA. For Barcelona, it is a reminder that approaching another club's player has consequences, even when the player has not moved. Alvarez has said he wants to stay focused on Atletico's season. The next test is whether his goals can keep his club in the title race while the noise around him dies down.
