Tao Okamoto Receives Trailblazer Award at Tokyo American Film Night

Tao Okamoto has received The Hollywood Reporter's Trailblazer Award, presented at a gala in the ballroom of the Tokyo American Club, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The event was the 2026 American Film Night, a collaboration between THR Japan, the Japanese edition of the trade magazine, and the Motion Picture Association, the trade body for the major American film studios. It took place during the Tokyo International Film Festival.
Japan's Prime Minister, Sanae Takaichi, sent a special message to the gala. Okamoto received the award from Urmila Venugopalan, president of the Motion Picture Association's Asia-Pacific arm, and Tsukasa Shiga, chairman of THR Japan.
Okamoto's screen career began in Hollywood. Her first major role came in The Wolverine in 2013, and she went on to appear in Hannibal and The Man in the High Castle. In 2023 she moved her base from the United States to Japan.
Her most recent major honour came at the Cannes Film Festival, where she won best actress for her performance in All of a Sudden, directed by Ryusuke Hamaguchi. The film is a co-production with France, Germany and Belgium, meaning companies from several countries share the making and costs of a single film.
Past winners of the Trailblazer Award include Takehiro Hira and Tadanobu Asano, both stars of the television series Shogun. Okamoto now joins them on the list.
The award adds a new name to a Tokyo event that puts Japanese and American film people in the same room. For the festival crowd, it also marks one more moment in an actor's career that has moved between Hollywood, Japan and European co-productions.
