Two high-speed passenger trains collided near Toledo, Spain, on Oct. 28, 2026, causing a derailment. The New York Times reported that at least 10 people were killed, while The Independent reported at least 39 dead.

The collision happened just after 9 a.m. between Mora and Orgaz and Urda, according to Adif, Spain's rail authority. The crash site lies on the line between Madrid and Sevilla, which both trains were travelling.

The two trains were a Renfe train and an Iryo train. The Renfe train carried 397 passengers and the Iryo train carried about 150, according to the Times. Renfe is Spain's state-linked rail operator, and Iryo is a separate company that also runs high-speed services on the route.

Accounts of how the trains came together differ in their details. The Times reported that one train rear-ended the other and that two carriages went down an embankment. Early reports cited by Spain's transportation ministry said two carriages of the Iryo train had derailed.

High-speed service from Madrid to Andalusia, in southern Spain, was suspended after the crash.

The same two companies were involved in a January 2026 crash on a southern line in Spain, which killed 46 people, the Times reported.
