Newcastle Red Bulls captain Tom Christie has signed a contract extension that keeps him at the club until the end of the 2028-29 season, BBC Sport reported.

Christie is 28 and a New Zealander. He plays as a flanker, one of the loose forwards who form the back row of the pack. Flankers tend to make a lot of tackles, cover huge amounts of ground and compete for the ball in the ruck, the contest on the floor that follows a tackle when players from both sides fight for possession.

He joined Newcastle from the Crusaders in August 2025. The Crusaders play in Super Rugby, the leading professional club competition in the southern hemisphere. Moving from that competition to the English Premiership is a big step, and the club has described his arrival as the first major signing of its new era, according to the club's own athlete page.

So far he has scored six tries in 24 appearances for the club. A try is worth five points and is scored by grounding the ball over the opponents' try line.

The club's own announcement, which Newcastle Red Bulls has published, presents the deal as a commitment from both sides. For a captain, a longer contract means the leader on the field is also set to stay in the job for several seasons. Whether that changes how the side is built around him is a question for the coming campaigns.

It is too early to say what the new deal will mean for results. What is clear is that one of the club's most recognisable players has chosen to stay put.
