Branden Jacobs-Jenkins's play Purpose will have its European premiere at the Royal Court Theatre in London, with a cast now confirmed. WhatsOnStage reported the announcement on 28 October 2026.

The play won Best Play at the 2025 Tony Awards, the top prizes for Broadway theatre in New York, and it has also won the Pulitzer Prize for drama. A European premiere is the first staging in Europe. The London run will be a Steppenwolf Theatre Company production, the Chicago company that first staged the play. Chicago Tribune also reported the company's return to London with the show.

Phylicia Rashad directs. The cast includes Alana Arenas, Glenn Davis, Jon Michael Hill, Harry Lennix and LaTanya Richardson Jackson. Kalyne Coleman will also join the London run from the original Broadway company.

The production runs in the Royal Court's Jerwood Theatre Downstairs, a smaller auditorium below the main stage, from 16 January to 27 February 2027. The press night, the first evening when critics attend, is set for 25 January 2027. Performances will be in the venue's Sloane Square building, so the run is fixed in the calendar well ahead of the opening.

The creative team includes set designer Todd Rosenthal, costume designer Dede Ayite and lighting designer Amith Chandrashaker. Rob Milburn and Michael Bodeen are the sound designers. The London production is presented by the Royal Court alongside David Stone, Debra Martin Chase, Marc Platt and Robyn Coles.

Casting is by JC Clementz and Calleri Jensen Davis. Ticket prices and booking details have not yet been published.

For London theatregoers, the dates give a clear window. The run opens in mid-January and closes at the end of February, so anyone planning to see it needs to watch for booking news in the coming weeks.
