All 24 Copa del Rey matches scheduled for Wednesday 28 October have been suspended as a mark of respect after a train crash near Madrid killed more than 30 people, according to BBC Sport.

The Copa del Rey is Spain's knockout cup. Clubs from across the leagues play one-off ties, and the loser is out. Wednesday's games were first-round ties, including Levante, Alaves, Valencia, Celta Vigo and Real Betis. Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid are not due to enter until the last-32 round, the stage where 32 teams remain.

The crash happened in Toledo province. JPost reports that two high-speed trains collided, with one slamming into the back of a train that had stopped. Two wagons derailed. More than 500 passengers were travelling on the trains. The Madrid to Andalusia rail line was suspended after the collision.

The Spanish football federation, the RFEF, said the decision to suspend Wednesday's matches was made in solidarity with the victims. The same reason lay behind its decision to postpone nine Copa de España futsal matches due on Wednesday. Futsal is a fast, indoor version of five-a-side, played on a hard court with a heavier, low-bouncing ball. The federation announced the postponements on its website.

Clubs also responded. FC Barcelona expressed condolences and solidarity with the victims of the accident between Los Yebenes and Urda. Real Madrid sent condolences to the victims' families and full support to the emergency services working at the scene.

Thursday's Copa del Rey matches are not affected by the Wednesday suspension and remain on schedule.

For one midweek, the football has taken second place. The cup will resume its usual rhythm, but the matches that were due to be played on Wednesday will not be.
