Gordon Brothers, the owner of Poundland, is poised to file a notice of intention to appoint AlixPartners as administrator of the discount chain, potentially as early as Wednesday, according to The Guardian. Administration is a formal insolvency process in which an appointed professional takes control of a company that cannot pay its debts, with the aim of rescuing or selling the business.

Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds, the minister responsible for business, wrote to Gordon Brothers to establish the latest situation at Poundland. He also instructed his chief strategic business adviser, David Bickerton, to establish the facts regarding the chain's potential collapse.

Gordon Brothers bought the 600-store Poundland chain for £1 in summer 2025. The group also includes Dealz, a 50-store chain in Ireland, and employs 12,000 staff. Gordon Brothers took on £30m in debts with Poundland and hoped to recoup that amount.

Poundland rejected a bid from Martin Property Group, a company based in Northern Ireland, to take on the whole group as a solvent company, meaning one able to pay its debts. The bid was understood to be worth more than £15m, with only a portion paid upfront.

Poundland's boss, Barry Williams, told workers that the rejection of the Martin Property Group bid was unexpected, unwanted and wholly avoidable.

Three independent directors who had been appointed to help oversee a sale of Poundland have quit, amid disquiet over the move toward insolvency.

In October, the UK government was put on alert over the risk of thousands of job losses at Poundland, according to the Telegraph.
