Sundance 2027 Heads to Boulder With a Slate of Anniversary Screenings

The Sundance Film Festival will hold its first edition in Boulder, Colorado, in January 2027. On 28 October, the festival named the first films in its lineup, and most of them are older titles returning to the screen, Deadline reported.
The in-person event runs from 21 to 31 January. Its Legacy portion, the strand that brings back films from the festival's past, takes place from 27 to 31 January. An online portion runs from 28 to 31 January. The Legacy strand was formerly known as From the Collection.
The opening slate includes the 2002 Sundance version of Better Luck Tomorrow, directed by Justin Lin. It also includes a 25th anniversary screening of a 4K restoration of Y tu mamá también, directed by Alfonso Cuarón. A 4K restoration is a high-resolution digital version rebuilt from the original film.
Other titles include a digital 4K restoration of Dogtown and Z-Boys, directed by Stacy Peralta, and a 25th anniversary screening of Real Women Have Curves, directed by Patricia Cardoso. Tom Kalin's Swoon will mark its 35th anniversary.
One session stands out for its format. Sundance has scheduled a two-part event called Cinema Interruptus featuring Christopher Nolan's Memento, which includes a 4K restoration and a discussion. The festival has not yet detailed how the two parts will be split.
Letterboxd, the film-logging site where members rate and review movies, is a co-presenter of the Legacy programme. Its involvement means the platform will help shape how these screenings are presented to audiences.
Sundance has said the full 2027 festival lineup will be announced in December. That list will bring in new films alongside the archive titles, and it will show which work the festival's programmers have chosen for their debut in front of audiences.
For anyone planning a trip or a viewing, the key dates are simple. Boulder hosts the main event from 21 to 31 January, and the Legacy screenings fill the final five days.
