The director John Carpenter will receive this year's Golden Eddie Filmmaker of the Year award from American Cinema Editors, the professional body for film and television editors. The honour will be presented at the 77th annual ACE Eddie Awards, which the group has set for February 7, 2027, at Royce Hall on the UCLA campus in Los Angeles. Deadline first reported the announcement on October 28, 2026.

The ceremony will have a host. Patton Oswalt, the comedian and actor, will host the evening. The same ceremony will also give Career Achievement awards to Bonnie Koehler and Christopher Nelson, both of whom will be recognised for long careers in the industry.

Carpenter is no stranger to awards from the film world. The Los Angeles Film Critics Association chose him for its Career Achievement Award in 2024, and the group had honoured him with its New Generation Award nearly 50 years before that. In October 2026, he also received the Luminary Award at the Academy Museum Gala in Los Angeles, according to a Yahoo video report.

The Eddie Awards are unusual in one way. Editors vote for the honours, and the people being honoured are chosen for their work in the cutting room as well as their wider impact on filmmaking. For a general audience, that means the award sits with the people who shape the finished picture, not only the names on the poster.

Nominees for the 2027 ceremony will be announced on Thursday, January 14, 2027. Nominations will be given in 14 categories. That announcement is the next date on the calendar, and it will show which films and shows the editors have picked for this year's honours.

Carpenter's Golden Eddie is one of several awards that will be handed out in February. Anyone interested in the full list of honourees and nominees can check ACE's website once the January announcement is made.
