Sleeping Dogs Movie Team Says It Is Taking Its Time

Director Timo Tjahjanto says he and actor Simu Liu are working to bring a Sleeping Dogs movie to the screen, and they are taking their time to get it right.
In a post on X dated 28 October 2026, Timo Tjahjanto said the team is aiming for the best version of the film. He said the adaptation will stay loyal to Wei Shen's story from the video game, while adding layers to suit a feature-length film.
Sleeping Dogs is a video game, and Wei Shen is its lead character. Adapting a game means deciding what to keep from the original and what to build out, because a film has a different shape from a game that can run for dozens of hours. Tjahjanto's post describes that balance without giving a release date.
Liu has been part of the project's public updates for most of the year. On 1 January 2026, he publicly named Tjahjanto as the director of the Sleeping Dogs movie. In August, Liu told Complex that the film adaptation was "moving along really well."
Liu's comments in August and Tjahjanto's post in October describe the same project at different stages. Both point to a slow, careful build rather than a rush to a date.
For fans, the update is a reminder that film projects often run for years between announcements and first images. Anyone waiting for the movie can expect more news as the production moves forward.
