Barbara Barrie, Tony and Oscar nominee and Barney Miller actress, dies at 95

Barbara Barrie, a Tony- and Oscar-nominated actress who played Elizabeth on Barney Miller, has died. She was 95.
Barrie died at her home in Manhattan, according to Deadline. Her daughter, Jane Harnick, reported the death to The New York Times. Deadline also reported that the death was medically assisted and that Barrie had been diagnosed with terminal cancer.
Barrie began her career on the stage. She received a Tony nomination for her role in the original Broadway production of Company, the Stephen Sondheim musical. A Tony nomination means a performer has been shortlisted for one of the top awards in Broadway theatre.
She later reached a wider film audience. She received an Oscar nomination for her performance in Breaking Away, the 1979 film about a group of young men in Indiana who are figuring out what comes next after school. An Oscar nomination is the Academy Awards' equivalent of a shortlist, with the winners chosen from the nominees in each category.
On television, Barrie played the wife of the police captain at the centre of Barney Miller. Hal Linden played the captain, Barney Miller. Barrie played Elizabeth, the captain's wife, a role that put her in front of a large audience each week.
The death was reported on 28 October 2026. Barrie's Broadway, film and television work spans decades, and her name is linked to some of the best-known productions of her era.
