Vance Writes to Iran's Security Chief Proposing Restart of Peace Talks

Vice President JD Vance has sent a letter to Mohsen Rezaei, the chief of Iran's Security Council, proposing that peace talks between the United States and Iran resume. The outreach was reported on October 28, 2026, Axios and other outlets reported.
In the letter, Vance suggested an immediate resumption of comprehensive talks, including talks about Iran's nuclear program, according to The New York Times. A comprehensive negotiation covers a broad set of disputed issues rather than a single topic.
The Wall Street Journal described Rezaei as an Iranian hard-liner, a term for officials who take a firm line against compromise with Washington. The New York Post used the same description and reported that the outreach came days before the midterm elections in the United States.
The two countries have been at war for seven months as of October 2026, according to Reuters. In an earlier interview with Reuters, Vance said Iran must make a meaningful reduction in its enrichment capacity, meaning its ability to enrich uranium, to satisfy U.S. demands and end the war.
Vance also said that President Donald Trump was enthusiastic about the letter, according to the Jerusalem Post.
