King Charles danced through the streets of Nassau, the capital of the Bahamas, during the Junkanoo parade, shaking a pair of maracas, the hand-held shakers used in Caribbean music. Hello Magazine reported that the parade had been put on in his honour.

The dancing came during a nine-day Caribbean tour that includes the Bahamas, Guyana, and Antigua and Barbuda. The King arrived in the Bahamas on Tuesday, and the parade fell on the second day of the visit. USA Today reported that he wore sunglasses and played cowbells as he danced.

Junkanoo is a street parade with a long history in the islands. It is usually held in Nassau on Boxing Day and New Year's Day, and it features elaborate floats, colourful costumes and feathered headdresses. Marchers and dancers fill the streets with rhythm, so a royal visitor joining in is an unusual sight.

Before the parade, the King met schoolchildren from the Bahamas in Clifford Park, according to Hello Magazine. Nassau's celebrations took place while a slavery reparations protest was also under way. The Independent reported the protest alongside the maraca appearance. Reparations are payments sought to make up for the harm of slavery, and the campaign has been a live debate across the Caribbean.

The tour has further engagements ahead. The King will lead the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting in Antigua and Barbuda between November 1 and 4, and Queen Camilla will join him for the Antigua and Barbuda leg. The Commonwealth is a group of countries, most of them former parts of the British Empire, that meets to discuss shared concerns.

Royal tours often include moments of informal fun, but the dancing in Nassau stood out for its ease. Video and photos of the King in sunglasses, with maracas and cowbells, quickly drew attention. The Bahamas leg has now given the tour its most talked-about scene so far.
