Elena Rybakina has secured the year-end world No. 1 ranking in women's tennis, after beating Yulia Putintseva 6-2 6-3 in the last 16 of the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo. The year-end No. 1 is the player at the top of the rankings when the season closes, so it is earned across the whole year, not one tournament.

The match was over in under an hour and a half of tennis, and it was simple to follow. Rybakina took the first set 6-2, then won the second 6-3. She served six aces, serves the opponent cannot get a racket on, and hit 25 winners, shots that land where the opponent cannot reach. Putintseva is also from Kazakhstan, as Rybakina is, and it was Rybakina's first match at this tournament.

The result is the latest step in a big season. Rybakina won the Australian Open in Melbourne and the US Open in New York in 2026. She beat Aryna Sabalenka in both finals. Earlier this month she also won the Ningbo Open in China, beating Leylah Fernandez 6-2 6-2 in the final, her fourth title of the year.

Her climb to the top has been steady. She first moved to the top of the world rankings after beating Zheng Qinwen in the quarter-finals of the US Open. WTA Tennis describes her as the 30th world No. 1 since the WTA rankings began in 1975, and the first player from Kazakhstan to reach the top.

For the rankings, the year-end title matters because it sets the seeding for the biggest events. A seeding is the order that places the top players in a draw so they avoid each other early. Rybakina's place at the top also gives her a clear edge going into the end of the season.

The season finishes with the WTA Finals, which run from 8 to 15 November at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in California. Rybakina will defend her singles title there. The event brings together the best players of the year, so it will be the next big test for the new year-end No. 1.

For fans, the simplest way to put it is this. Rybakina has now won two of the year's four Grand Slam titles, a string of big tournaments, and the top spot when the year closes. Next, she gets to try to win the season's biggest event again.
