China's Communist Party has confirmed the expulsion of 33 officials, Reuters reported on October 29, 2026. To be expelled means to be removed from party membership.
Among those expelled is Liu Jianchao, a former diplomat, according to The New York Times. Another is Ma Xingrui, a former member of the Politburo, the party's top decision-making body, as reported by Internazionale.
Nearly half of the 33 expelled members were military officers, according to Nikkei Asia.
The expulsions were affirmed by a plenum, a full meeting of the party's senior leadership, which endorsed a earlier decision by the Politburo to remove the 33 high-ranking members, Nikkei Asia reported.
The announcement lists the officials' removal from the party.
