NewsNation will run five hours of 2026 midterm election coverage on Tuesday, November 3, and it wants the show to be light on talk. According to Variety, the cable channel's election-night plan aims to cut out opinion, commentary and talking-head roundtables.

The special live coverage starts at 7 p.m. ET and runs to midnight, as NewsNation announced. Chris Cuomo, Elizabeth Vargas, Leland Vittert and Katie Pavlich will co-anchor from Washington, D.C. Chris Stirewalt, NewsNation's political editor, and Connell McShane will cover the data and statistics from New York.

The numbers will come from Decision Desk HQ, a firm that collects vote counts and makes race calls. Its data staff will work from a "war room" at Georgetown University during the broadcast. The firm's data helped NewsNation become the first network to call the 2024 presidential election for Donald Trump.

The format is the part that sets this night apart. Variety reports that NewsNation intends the coverage to resemble the NFL's RedZone channel, which hops between games whenever one reaches a key moment. In this case, the hops would be between races as results come in.

The election-night show is the last stop in a long day on the channel. Connell McShane will host a three-hour NewsNation Live block from 3 to 6 p.m. ET, and a special edition of The Hill follows it. NewsNation has also been running its own midterm previews for weeks, including a Decision Desk '26 program covering key House and Senate races.

The stakes are broad. Thirty-six governorships are on the ballot on November 3, according to a NewsNation guide published on October 19. Local stations are also in the mix. WGN News, a Nexstar station in Chicago, will run its own special live election-night coverage, with extensive reporting on the governor's race and major local and national contests.

NewsNation is a cable news channel owned by Nexstar Media. Its election plan now comes down to a simple test: whether a night of results can hold viewers' attention without the commentary.
